Production of a Superplastic Vibration-Damping Steel Sheet Composite Using Friction Stir Forming

Abstract: This study proposes a novel method of manufacturing composite vibration-damping steel sheet with Zn-22Al superplastic alloy using friction stir forming (FSF). Trials of mechanical interlocking of steel sheet with Zn-22Al superplastic alloy using FSF were carried out on a modified milling machine. The results are discussed in terms of residual microstructures and mechanical properties. We concluded that cladding steel sheet with Zn-22Al superplastic alloy using FSF results in superplastic forming and diffusion … Show more

“…Recently, a new metal forming method using the principles of Friction Stir Welding (FSW) [1] called "Friction Stir Forming (FSF)" [2] has gained attention in the field of dissimilar material joining [3][4][5][6][7]. Prof. Tadashi Nishihara of Kokushikan University, the developer of this method, proposed placing the workpiece on the mold and applying friction stir on the backside of the workpiece to transfer the mold shape onto the workpiece, as shown in Fig.…”

“…On the other hand, a new metal forming method using the principles of Friction Stir Welding (FSW) [1] called "Friction Stir Forming (FSF)" [2] has gained attention in the field of dissimilar material joining [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Prof. Tadashi Nishihara of Kokushikan University, the developer of this method, proposed placing the workpiece on the mold and applying friction stir on the backside of the workpiece to transfer the mold shape onto the workpiece.…”

“…This method is called 'friction stir forming (FSF)'. FSF was invented by Nishihara [2] at Kokushikan University and has been studied in the authors' laboratory [3][4][5][6][7]. The functions of FSF are to machine a groove on a die, place a plate on it and perform the process on its backside.…”
