Production of Biomass Briquettes Using Coconut Husk and Male Inflorescence of Elaeis guineensis

Abstract: The decreasing availability of fuel wood coupled with the increasing prices of kerosene and cooking gas in Nigeria has drawn attention on the need to consider alternative sources of energy for domestic and industrial use in the country. The study was undertaken to evaluate the combustion properties (percentage volatile matter, percentage ash content, percentage fixed carbon, heating value) of briquette produced from coconut husk and male inflorescence of Elaeis guineensis. The experiment was laid down using th… Show more

“…The briquettes have a smooth exterior and inner surfaces with no apparent surface cracks. They are cylindrical in shape and have internal or central holes with mean internal and external diameters of 15 and 37,57 that significant expansion takes place primarily along the axial load direction than the diametral axis.…”

“…In general, the calorific value contained in coconut shells is between 18200 kJ/kg to 19,338.05 kJ/kg [23]. Source: [23] Briquetting is the process of mixing one or several crushed materials (such as sawdust, peanut shells, coconut husks, palm oil, rice husks, corn cobs, bamboo and other combustible materials) into solid compression materials under pressure and often using a binder such as cassava starch [24].…”
