Production of briquettes from Indonesia agricultural biomass waste by using pyrolysis process and comparing the characteristics

Abstract: Indonesia biomass waste is a potential feedstock as a source of renewable energy since it can be converted into carcoal briquettes. However, the production of the briquettes using pyrolysis process using the agricultural waste was lacking. In this research, briquette was made from palm shells,  corncob and soybean stem wood due to its high availability and have high cellulose content. The purpose of this research was to produce briquettes from three kind of raw materials by employing pyrolysis process and comp… Show more

“…Biomass become a great energy source because there are so many raw materials can be used for energy includes, agricultural residues, manure, wood slivers, food residue, wastewater and garbage [1] . After coal and petroleum, biomass become the third largest energy resource [2] . Biomass in Indonesia has a potential of 103 million tonnes per year which is just utilized as alternative energy by 42% [3] .…”

“…There is another requirement of the briquette that should be not easy to break, not brittle and have smooth surface. It should also not leave black to the hand [15]. It can be seen that there are different results of the briquette under pressure 20 N/cm 2 and 50 N/cm 2 for the same material of the briquette such as that under the pressure of 20 N/cm 2 showed of more sturdy of the briquette, not easy to brake, compact but might have different appearance of surface, either rough (i.e., Rambutan and Guava) or soft (Langsat).…”
