We discuss fixed target and ISR inclusive photon production and attempt a comparison between theory and experiments. The dependence of the theoretical predictions on the structure functions, and on the renormalization and factorization scales is investigated. The main result of this study is that the data cannot be simultaneously fitted with a single set of scales and structure functions. On the other hand, there is no need for an additional intrinsic k T to force the agreement between QCD predictions and experiments, with the possible exception of one data set. Since the data cover almost overlapping kinematical ranges this raises the question of consistency among data sets. Unlike electrons, which can generate bremsstrahlung photons with nearly the full primary electron energy, protons collisions generate γ-rays primarily through π 0 decays (direct γ-ray production is only at the level of 10% that of π 0 s at 500 GeV/c, for example [53]), where the secondary π 0 s carry only a fraction of the primary proton energy. Therefore, even though the CR p/e ratio is ∼ 10 2 , we do not need to follow 10 9 protons (compared to 10 7 electrons) through the detector.…”

Isolated photons with high transverse energy have been studied in deep inelastic ep scattering with the ZEUS detector at HERA, using an integrated luminosity of 326 pb −1 in the range of exchanged-photon virtuality 10-350 GeV 2 . Outgoing isolated photons with transverse energy 4 < E γ T < 15 GeV and pseudorapidity −0.7 < η γ < 0.9 were measured with accompanying jets having transverse energy and pseudorapidity 2.5 < E jet T < 35 GeV and −1.5 < η jet < 1.8, respectively. Differential cross sections are presented for the following variables: the fraction of the incoming photon energy and momentum that is transferred to the outgoing photon and the leading jet; the fraction of the incoming proton energy transferred to the photon and leading jet; the differences in azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity between the outgoing photon and the leading jet and between the outgoing photon and the scattered electron. Comparisons are made with theoretical predictions: a leading-logarithm Monte Carlo simulation, a next-to-leading-order QCD prediction, and a prediction using the k T -factorisation approach.
