Production of Iron from Mill Scale Industrial Waste via Hydrogen

Abstract: Mill scale is very attractive industrial waste due to its richness in iron (about = 72% Fe). In this paper, the characterizations of mill scale were studied by different methods of analyses. The produced mill scale briquettes were reduced with hydrogen at varying temperatures, and the reduction kinetics was determined. Two models were applied and the energy of activation was calculated.

“…There is lack of facilities for recycling of mill scale at the smaller capacity plants; due to absence of a sinter making facility in such units does not offer any scope for in-house recycling of mill scale. 5 Research works [5][6][7][8][9][10] have been carried out on various processes for use of mill scale as a charge material for iron and steel making. Due to fine size of mill scale, it is being agglomerated with or without carbonaceous material either by briquetting or sinter making.…”

“…Many sources Fe 2 O 3 apart from nature that they can be used as raw material for producing of permanent magnets Ba -Ferrite, one of which is the mill scale. A mill scale is a very attractive industrial waste due to its richness in iron oxide (about = 80 % Fe) [11]. The total content of iron oxide in the mill scale is quite high, so the mill scale can be used as an alternative raw material to produce barium hexaferrite.…”

“…Mill scale can be recycled in a steel plant to produce iron ore pellets, iron ore sinter, briquettes after mixing with a binder which used in the reduction process in iron making furnace. Also mill scale can be used in different applications like batteries, catalysts and mixed fertilizers [3,4]. Studies related to the reduction of iron ore using coke breeze have been discussed.…”
