Impact of Maize–Mushroom Intercropping on the Soil Bacterial Community Composition in Northeast China

Conservative agricultural practices have been adopted to improve soil quality and maintain crop productivity. An efficient intercropping of maize with mushroom has been developed in Northeast China. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of planting patterns on the diversity and structure of the soil bacterial communities at a 0–20 cm depth in the black soil zone of Northeast China. The experiment consisted of monoculture of maize and mushroom, and intercropping in a split-plot arrangement. The characteristics of soil microbial communities were performed by 16S rRNA gene amplicom sequencing. The results showed that intercropping increased soil bacterial richness and diversity compared with maize monoculture. The relative abundances of Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Saccharibacteria and Planctomycetes were significantly higher, whereas Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were lower in intercropping than maize monoculture. Redundancy analysis suggested that pH, NO3−-N and NH4+-N contents had a notable effect on the structure of the bacterial communities. Moreover, intercropping significantly increased the relative abundance of carbohydrate metabolism pathway functional groups. Overall, these findings demonstrated that intercropping of maize with mushroom strongly impacts the physical and chemical properties of soil as well as the diversity and structure of the soil bacterial communities, suggesting this is a sustainable agricultural management practice in Northeast China.

Pradesh, in the two consecutive year 2010-2011 and 2011-12.Edible mushroom Pleurotus sajor caju (Fr.)' to evaluate the varying amount of substrate for the production of P. sajor caju. The experiments were laid out in completely Randomized design. In order to study the effect of different quantity of wheat straw on the yield of P. sajor caju, an experiment was conducted with six replications and five treatments viz. 0.75 kg, 1.00 kg, 1.25 kg, 1.50 kg, and 2.0 kg dry wheat straw as substrate. The substrate preparation was done by using technique described earlier in cultivation techniques. Out of these different quantities of substrate used, the 2.0 kg dry substrate gave the maximum yield. This was followed by the yield obtained from 1.50kg, 1.0 kg and 0.750 kg dry substrate. The result also revealed that the biological efficiency of 1.25 kg and 1.0 kg substrate were found superior during 2011 and 2012 respectively in comparison to other treatments. It may be attributed due to increase in growing surface area.

Purpose A study was conducted to assess production of Pleurotus columbinus mushroom fruiting bodies for different formulations of rice or corn straw substrates mixed at different percent portions with the corresponding composted straw. Methods These formulations were: (1) raw straw (RS) mixed with 5 % composted straw (CS), (2) RS mixed with 10 % CS, (3) RS mixed with 15 % CS, (4) RS mixed with 25 % CS, (5) RS mixed with 50 % CS, and (6) 100 % RS. Composted straw (CS) was made of moistened chopped RS mixed with chicken manure and soil (4:1:1, v/v). Results Data showed a magnificent impact of the substrate on oyster mushroom fruiting bodies yield and characteristics. There was a significant progressive upgrading in all parameters studied of mushroom growth and crop outcome with increasing the percentage of CS mixed with the RS substrate up to 15 %. Utilizing CS at 25 % significantly downgraded these parameters. No mushroom growth was observed at all when cultivated in medium contained 50 % CS. Instead, molds of different colors grew on that latter substrate mixture. The formulation containing 15 % CS distinctly gave the uppermost fruiting bodies yield, biological efficiency, earliness for pinheads formation, fruiting body cap diameter, thickness and weight and stem diameter, length and weight. Up to 80 % increase in fruiting bodies crop outcome relative to sole RS was detected. Conclusions This study suggests that composted straw substrates hold a great promise for the development of Pleurotus mushroom production industry.
