Production of recombinant proteins in milk of transgenic and non-transgenic goats

Abstract: Among all the transgenic mammalians produced so far, goats have represented an excellent model of transgenesis when considering the factors such as the market demand for protein, volume of milk produced per lactation and reproductive rate. Various recombinant proteins have been obtained from the transgenic and non-transgenic goats, and among these, human antithrombin, produced by the transgenic goats, was the first recombinant protein of animal origin to be released as a drug for the clinical use in humans. Th… Show more

“…Collectively, our data not only provides new insights regarding miRNAs participation in the gene network controlling milk fat synthesis, but also gives us important clues that miR-103 may be used as an index for a molecular breeding program in goats. Furthermore, transgenic goats have been reported to secrete milk containing lactoferrin, α-fetoprotein, and lysozymes [91] , [92] , [93] . These successes in goats provide important clues that over-expression of certain component are feasible in the mammary gland.…”

“…Transgenic animals possess a transgene coding a recombinant protein that is integrated into their genome, and they are capable of passing it on to their offspring. Nowadays, the ways of sourcing proteins include milk from transgenic mammals and eggs from transgenic chickens (Moura et al, 2011;Maksimenko et al, 2013;Owczarek et al, 2019). The natural secretion of recombinant proteins occurs in this system and provides the correct PTMs.…”
