Production of Reduced Graphene Oxide Platelets from Graphite Flakes Using the Fenton Reaction as an Alternative to Harmful Oxidizing Agents

Abstract: The conventional chemical methods to produce graphene using strong oxidizing agents produce toxic gases during synthesis; therefore, these methods do not meet the principles of green chemistry. In this work, an alternative top-down method for the synthesis of a few layers of graphene sheets has been produced by a Fenton reaction- (a mixture of Fe2+/H2O2) assisted exfoliation process in water using graphite flakes as a starting material. Based on X-ray diffraction data and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Ram… Show more

“…The X-ray diffractogram of GO shows three main diffraction peaks, the most intense at 2Ɵ value of 9.55 is typical of GO [37] and the peaks at 18.30 and 25.35 correspond to reduced graphene oxide (Figure 3). The X-ray diffractograms of GP and MG are very similar and show the main diffraction peak at 2Ɵ value of 26.40-26.55 which corresponds to the (002) plane of graphite [38], and small diffractions peaks at 2Ɵ values of 004) and (110) planes of graphite [39][40][41] also appear.…”

“…Chemical exfoliation, a scalable technique, towards the production of reducing of GO (rGO) from GO, commonly sustains the solution at temperature between the range of 85-100 C (moisture) [30]. GO is an exfoliated form of graphite, which comprises various oxygen-containing functionalities and is usually synthesised via ultrasonication methods in deionised water condition.…”

“…These properties of GO were chosen in this investigation for their optimization with the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). As indicated in the mentioned studies, the GO production with the less defective reduced product was performed in hydrogen peroxide [4], and the indicated properties significantly impacted the quality of GO [5]. Moreover, the practical value of GO was revealed in killing bacteria related to its surface physical properties [6].…”

“…The physicochemical, mechanical, and biological characteristics of GO, such as its activity with ferrous ions in hydrogen peroxide [4], rheological properties [5], antibiofilm activity [6], hemocompatibility [7,8], and the cost of its preparation [9] with or without polymers have been carried out, previously. These properties of GO were chosen in this investigation for their optimization with the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS).…”
