The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between body mass index (BMI), ultrasound measurements (USM), and internal fat (IF) in hair sheep. The BMI and USM were determined 24 hours before laughter in 35 animals finished in intensive fattening. At slaughter, the IF (inner adipose tissue) was dissected, weighed, and grouped as mesenteric, omental, or perirenal fat; these three depots were summed to obtain their total weight. The relationship of the variables was evaluated through Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) using the CORR procedure and by regression models using the REG procedure of SAS ver. 9.3. The IF and BMI presented r= 0.75 (P <.0001), while the IF and USM presented an r that varied from 0.70 to 0.80 (P <.0001). Among the internal fat deposits, the perirenal was the one that presented minor correlation coefficients with BMI (r = 0.55), subcutaneous fat thickness (0.55), and thoracic Longissimus dorsi area) (r = 0.33), and for this, the last correlation was not significant (P>0.05). The regression equation between IF and BMI had a coefficient of determination (r2) of 0.67 (P <.0001). The inclusion of the subcutaneous fat thickness together with the BMI improved the r2 with a range of 0.77. The BMI and the subcutaneous fat thickness could be used to predict the weight of the internal fat in hair sheep.

Objective: To evaluate the reproductive and productive behavior of four hair sheep breeds in an intensive production system. Design/Methodology/Approach: Data recorded over 4 years (2016-2019) from a production unit that works with Blackbelly, Pelibuey, Dorper, and Katahdin breeds were analyzed. The following variables were evaluated: fertility, prolificacy, birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), weaned lamb yield (WLY), daily weight gain during lactation (DWGL), offspring born alive (OBA), male offspring (MO), and female offspring (FO). All information was analyzed using Chi-square tests and analysis of variance. Results: The fertility, BW, WW, and WYL variables recorded different values between breeds (P<0.05). The greatest fertility and prolificacy were recorded by Blackbelly, while Dorper recorded the lowest values (P<0.05). BW and WW were highest in Dorper and lowest in Blackbelly (P<0.05). Finally, the sheep that recorded the highest WYL were the Blackbelly, while the Dorper registered the lowest values (P<0.05). BW and DWGL values reached maximum values (P<0.05) in Dorper rams, followed by Katahdin. The greatest number of OBA was observed in Blackbelly and Pelibuey (P<0.05). Study Limitations/Implications: Further studies should be carried out to validate this research. Findings/Conclusions: Blackbelly ewes produced more kilograms of weaned lambs per lambing ewe. The Dorper and Katahdin rams in the pre-weaning period recorded higher weight at weaning.

Background: Genetic improvement in the sheep species focuses on increasing the number of offspring per sheep. Heritable characteristics such as ovulation rate, fertility, and prolificacy are desirable. Objective: To evaluate the influence of estrus pre-synchronization with PGF2α on the manifestation of estrus, onset and return to estrus (1st and 2nd), pregnancy, lambing, prolificacy, and fertility in Katahdin ewes carrying exon 2 of the gene Factor Growth and Differentiation 9 (GDF9). Methodology: Seventy-two ewes were randomized into four treatments (T): T1 (n = 18), ewes without GDF9 gene and without estrus pre-synchronization; T2 (n = 17), ewes without GDF9 gene and with estrus pre-synchronization; T3 (n = 19) ewes with the GDF9 gene and without estrus pre-synchronization, and T4 (n = 18), ewes with the GDF9 gene and with estrus pre-synchronization. Results: The presence of estrus, the onset of estrus, and returns to estrus, pregnancy, and lambing percentages were not different between treatments (p>0.05). The average pregnancy and lambing in both cases were 86.2% and the average general prolificacy was 1.4 lambs per ewe for all four treatments. There were also no significant differences for the prolificacy or fertility rate (p>0.05). Implications: The present study contributes to the understanding of the use of presynchronization with PGF2α and the effect of the presence of exon 2 of the GDF9 gene on reproductive variables. Conclusions: The presynchronization of estrus with PGF2α and the presence of exon 2 of the GDF9 gene in ewes of the Katahdin breed did not have a significant effect on the reproductive variables evaluated.
