Productivity, nutrient use efficiency, energetic, and economics of winter maize in south India

Abstract: The winter maize area is rapidly spreading in south India in response to rising demand from the poultry and fish feed industries due to the absence of major environmental constraints. Further farmers’ are using the winter environment to expand maize area and production. Hence there is immense potential to increase the area under winter maize cultivation. There were no planned field experiments to explore and optimize the right time of sowing and quantity of fertilizer to be added previously due to the presence… Show more

“…The major focus of SSNM is to improve the crop yields and economic outputs for the local farmers by increasing nutrient-use efficiencies ( Rodriguez, 2020 ). Field-based and growth season-specific fertilizer requirements for a specific crop are measured before the start of the respective crop season to properly plan the protocol considering the climatic and soil conditions to better synchronize with critical growth stages ( Hulmani et al, 2022 ). Therefore, plant fertilizer requirements should necessarily be calculated aiming to reduce the production losses due to nutrient deficiencies and avoid mining the soil nutrients while ensuring the profitability that could only be possible with proper synchronization with potential crop demands under differential conditions ( Sharma et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Without compromising productivity and profitability, using the optimum quantity of nutrients is vital for agricultural sustainability (Salim and Raza, 2020). That is why to achieve sustainability, yields, economics, and nutrient use efficiency need to be considered with equal weighting (Hulmani et al, 2022).…”
