The purpose of the current study was to identify productive collection samples with high adaptive properties for use in pea breeding. The study was carried out at the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution “ARC “Donskoy”, located in the southern part of the Rostov region. The objects of study were 100 collection pea samples from the collection of the ARIGRP named after N. I. Vavilov, 47 samples of which were with a usual (leafy) and 53 samples with a leafless type of leaf. The variety ‘Aksaisky Usatiy 5’ was used as a standard. The years of study, differing in agroclimatic conditions during the vegetation period, made it possible to estimate collection samples according to adaptive properties. The mean productivity of the collection over the years of study was 2.10 t/ha (1.58–3.25 t/ha). Seed productivity in the group of samples with a leafless type (2.10 t/ha) was at the level with leafy samples (2.09 t/ha). At the same time, the coefficient of variation was lower in the group of leafless samples – 12.4 %, than in the group of leafy ones – 13.0 %. Seed productivity of the standard variety ‘Aksaisky Usatiy 5’ over the years of study was 2.00 t/ha, ranged from 1.42 to 3.30 t/ha. Among the leafy samples, the most productive ones were ‘OMK-3’ (2.46 t/ha), ‘221/73’ (2.55 t/ha), ‘269/80’ (2.67 t/ha), ‘525/80’ (2.68 t /ha), ‘Blagodatny’ (2.77 t/ha). Among the samples with a leafy type, the most productive ones turned out to be ‘Ramus’ (2.45 t/ha), ‘Svetozar’ (2.52 t/ha), ‘Lavr’ (2.55 t/ha), ‘Koral’ (2.56 t/ha), ‘Deviz’ (2.62 t/ha). The highest values of homeostaticity with high seed productivity were found in the samples with a usual leaf, such as ‘Blagodatny’ (4.14) and ‘525/80’ (5.23). And among the leafless samples, the best ones were ‘Deviz’ (7.57) and ‘Koral’ (7.60). The study results on the homeostaticity of seed productivity of pea samples were used in breeding work when selecting parental forms for hybridization.

Work on developing a new pea variety ‘Krasnoufimsky 20’ began in 2008 on the experimental fields of the Krasnoufimsky breeding center of the Ural Research Institute of Agriculture, a branch of the FSBSI UrFARC UrO RAS. The purpose of the current study was to develop a highly productive pea variety that is resistant to negative environmental conditions, resistant to diseases and pests, and has a non-lodging stem and non-shedding seeds. The greatest productivity excess of the variety ‘Krasnoufimsky 20’ compared to the standard was observed in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2022 (from 11 % to 62 %). On average, ‘Krasnoufimsky 20’ gave a significant excess over the standard by 0.26 t/ha. The variety ‘Krasnoufimsky 20’ requires weather conditions in the HTC range of 1.0–2.1 to obtain stable productivity. But regardless of environmental factors, both in favorable conditions and during periods of waterlogging or drought, the variety ‘Krasnoufimsky 20’ exceeded the standard by 0.03–0.83 t/ha. The variety ‘Krasnoufimsky 20’ ripened 1–3 days earlier than the standard, it has a larger number of beans and seeds per plant (by 0.2 and 1.5 pieces, respectively). The variety ‘Krasnoufimsky 20’ has a high seed productivity per plant (2.3 g). The variety is affected with ascochyta blight and root rot at the standard level, its damage by the codling moth is less than the standard. The new variety ‘Krasnoufimsky 20’ exceeded the standard variety Krasnoufimsky 11 and other varieties of local breeding according to adaptability. In 2023, it was decided to include the new pea variety ‘Krasnoufimsky 20’ in the State List of Breeding Achievements approved for use in the regions of Volga-Vyatka, North Caucasus, Ural, West Siberian.
Currently, in our country there is growing interest in the cultivation of high-tech pea varieties, which are characterized by uniform maturity, high productivity, and lodging resistance. Thus, breeding for lodging resistance is one of the most important criteria in pea breeding programs. The purpose of the current study was to search for anatomical indicators that could serve as a criterion when selecting pea samples for lodging resistance. The field trials were carried out in the fields of the laboratory for legumes breeding and seed production, the laboratory study was conducted in the laboratory for cell breeding of the FSBSI “ARC “Donskoy” in 2022–2023. The estimation of lodging resistance was carried out on 22 pea samples of the regional and foreign breeding. The studied samples differed in plant height, morpho-anatomical features of a stem structure, and lodging resistance. Based on the results of estimating an anatomical structure of a pea stem, there were identified such samples with a complex of traits (number of bundles, ratio of a number of bundles to stem tissues) as ‘Lu-153-06’, ‘G-1234’, ‘G-1193’, ‘G-1288’, ‘AKM’, ‘G-1313’, ‘Flagman 10’, ‘G-1313’. The analysis of correlations between anatomical indicators and field resistance to lodging has shown a high positive correlation with a stem height (r = 0.78±0.14), a mean negative correlation with a plant height (r = -0.66±0.17), and a mean positive correlation with a number of vascular bundles (r = 0.69±0.16). The experimental results allow concluding that the estimation of lodging resistance based on an anatomical structure of a pea stem is effective and can serve as a tester for lodging resistance.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
