Productivity, persistence and traits related to drought tolerance in smooth bromegrass

Abstract: This study was conducted to evaluate drought tolerance and persistence in a germplasm of smooth bromegrass and association of forage productivity with different traits. Thirty‐six genotypes of smooth bromegrass were clonally propagated and evaluated under two soil moisture environments for three years (2013–2015). High genotypic variation was observed among genotypes for all the measured traits. Drought stress decreased mean values for traits related to productivity. Also, the long‐term stress for three years … Show more

“…Hereafter, the term of “recurrent drought stress” refers to the drought stress applied during 2013–2015 and the term of “prolonged drought stress” refers to the drought stress applied during June and July of 2016. Persistence (PER) of genotypes was calculated as the difference of dry matter yield of first cut at the fourth year (2016) from dry matter yield of first cut at second year (2014; Saeidnia et al., 2017):PER=DMY12016DMY12014.…”

“…Given the advantages that perennial forage grasses such as smooth bromegrass ( Bromus inermis Leyss.) have in the arenas of both agricultural and forage sustainability for animal farming, they can be an effective substitute for annuals under drought conditions (Saeidnia, Majidi, Mirlohi, & Manafi, 2017).…”

“…Persistence is defined as the ability of plant to retain productivity over years (Annicchiarico et al, 2011) and is dependent on the ability of the plant to maintain a viable crown at the soil surface from which growth regenerates. In spaced plant material, the difference in performance over years can give an idea of persistence (Saeidnia, Majidi, Mirlohi, & Manafi, 2017b). Water deficit is a primary abiotic constraint modifying plant productivity worldwide (Hu & Xiong, 2014;Lobell et al, 2014).…”

“…It is known that hybrids can be a valuable source of variability for increasing resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses (Perlikowski et al 2014(Perlikowski et al , 2019. According to Saeidnia et al (2017), conducting research on the tolerance of crops to water stress based on the reduction of dry matter yield under drought conditions compared to optimal conditions is of great diagnostic value, especially in the context of breeding programs.…”
