Studies conducted in the last two decades, during which managed care has flourished, suggest that satisfaction may be correlated with self-employment (Baker and Cantor 1993); perceived intellectual rewards (Chuck et al 1993); working in group rather than solo practice (Skolnik et al 1993); control over the work environment and lack of bureaucratic regulations (Chuck et al 1993;Lammers 1992); and, for those working in staff model HMOs, participation in organizational decisions on such issues as hiring, adopting new services, or resolving patient grievances (Barr and Steinberg 1983).
