Professionalization of Police: A Question of Altruism

Abstract: The relationship between job satisfaction and public altruism within police is investigated. A meaningful, statistically significant correlation ( r = .38, p = .01) was found between these variables, particularly among more recent police department employees ( r = .55, p = .02). The happier the police are with police work, the more helpful they are toward the public, and vice versa. Although no causal relationship is established, the data are interpreted as a serious obstacle to the movement for professionaliz… Show more

“…Researchers have focused on areas such as selfperceptions (Munn & Renner, 19781, the relationship between officer job satisfaction and altruism (Khoury & Khoury, 1981), officers' perceptions of public opinion (Tuohy & WrennaH, 1995), attitudes of new officers compared with veteran officers toward the role of police officers (Ellis, 1991), and public opinion regarding police officers (Linguanti & McIntyre, 1992).…”

“…Specifically, 15 N-labeled glycopeptide corresponding to the fragment Cys34-Ser72 of M9 glycosylatedI L8 was designed, which turned out to be as ubstrate of UGGT. 1 The latter wasp repared by solid-phase peptides ynthesis conducted in as plit-Poolm anner,a nd then ligatedw ith the glycopeptidef ragment. Additiono fU GGT and UDP-Glucose to a mixture of glycopeptide library specifically glucosylated glycopeptides having V, F, and La tt he 65 position, clearly indicating that UGGTi nteracts with hydrophobic peptides exposed on protein surfacetointeractwith misfolded glycoproteins.…”

“…Althought heir amino acid sequences are defined by genetic codes encrypted in DNA sequences, many of them are modifiedp ost-or co-translationally in av ariety of manners, such as phosphorylation,s ulfation, lipidation, acylation, alkyla-tion, and glycosylation. [1] These modifications often change the physiological functions of proteins.…”
