Profiles of Community Violence Exposure, Moral Disengagement, and Bullying Perpetration: Evidence from a Sample of Italian Adolescents

Abstract: According to the Pathologic Adaptation Model of community violence exposure, repeated experiences of violence within the community lead youth to accept violence as a normative and legitimate strategy to cope with conflict, thus increasing their involvement in aggressive behaviors. This hypothesis has been under-investigated with reference to bullying at school. Using a person-centered analytical approach (latent profile analysis), this study examines the mediating role of moral disengagement as a type of norma… Show more

“…Considering community violence exposure is of particular interest for the context where the study was carried out, namely, Naples, in the south of Italy. Indeed, in this area, many adolescents drop out of school after the age of 14 and are fascinated by the presence of criminal organizations (Camorra) that not only control a great number of illegal activities (e.g., extortion, drug trafficking and dealing) but also receive considerable popular recognition and approval, thus constituting a normative reference point in terms of values and culture (Esposito et al, 2022).…”

“…One phenomenon that may occur in countries exposed to armed conflict and organized crime, such as Colombia, is the normalization of aggression as a problem-solving mechanism. According to the Pathological Adaptation Model of Exposure to Community Violence, repeated experiences of violence within the community lead young people to accept violence as a normative and legitimate coping strategy, thus increasing their engagement in aggressive behavior (Esposito et al, 2022). This may explain why we found a higher risk of students engaging in bullying, but we did not find the same for victimization.…”

“…In line with these considerations, a growing number of research (e.g., [ 26 , 58 ]), developed within the theoretical framework of moral disengagement [ 50 , 59 ], confirmed the key role of moral neutralization processes in promoting and strengthening youths’ aggressive tendencies. However, to date, only a few studies have systematically investigated the predictive role of cognitive distortions, as conceptualized by Gibbs and colleagues [ 42 ], in explaining peer-related aggression or bullying behavior [ 25 , 37 ].…”

“…To date, only a few studies have systematically examined the mediation and moderation mechanisms involved in explaining “why” and “for whom” anti-bullying intervention programs may activate expected behavioral changes. Based on previous research finding moral cognitive processes as key factors for explaining bullying perpetration (e.g., [ 25 , 26 ]) as well as that targeted interventions for aggressive behavior including cognitive behavioral approaches are effective in reducing peer aggression [ 27 ], this study aimed to evaluate, in the Italian school context, the effectiveness of an adapted version of the cognitive-behavioral program “EQUIPping Youth to Help One Another (EQUIP) for Educators” (EfE; [ 28 ]) in counteracting the bullying perpetration by correcting adolescents’ use of self-serving cognitive distortions. Furthermore, informed by the Vantage Sensitivity framework [ 29 , 30 ], according to which some individuals may be more likely than others to benefit from intervention, we examined whether individual differences in environmental sensitivity could moderate the intervention effects on expected changes.…”
