Background: Sychotropic agents (alcohol, drugs, and illicit substances) have an important effect on the occurrence or exacerbation of psychological and behavioral derangements such as criminal activity and mental abnormalities. Objectives: The objective was to assess the relationship between psychiatric distress and criminal history among abusers of intravenous drugs, including heroin, benzodiazepine, codeine, cannabis, opium, and ecstasy. Materials and Methods:Criminal activity history and psychiatric distress were evaluated among intravenous drug abusers in drop-in centers (DIC) (141 subjects) and an outpatient service to delivery methadone to the addicts located in Razy Hospital (Baghdad, Iraq) (120 subjects). Logistic regression analyses using the SPSS for Windows 18.0 were used for analyzing the data. Results: About 86% of the intravenous drug abusers had psychiatric distress and 48.2% had criminal activity history. DIC addicts group had a better mental well-being compared to the other group, but criminal history rate was similar in two groups. In multiple logistic regression, addiction to heroin (odds ratio [OR] = 1.9, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.1 -4.1), mental disorders (β = 0.060, P = 0.026), and low level of education was highly related with criminal activity (OR = 0.17, 95% CI: 0.03 -0.89). Conclusions: Higher scores in mental well-being questionnaire of DIC addicts suggest the positive effects of psychological interventions. There is a possibility of the involvement of heroin in occurrence of mental disorders and criminal activity. This finding needs further investigations by larger cohort studies.

Prisoners in Greek prisons: Correlation of demographic and psychosocial data with committed crimes

Previous literature shows an association between several psychosocial factors or life events in general and delinquency. Factors such as gender, cannabis and drugs use are firmly connected to delinquency. Similarly, interpersonal violent behavior appears to be more frequent in people with lower socioeconomic status and people with lower education. The association of these factors with the violent or non-violent crimes, especially in Greek research literature, is very limited. The present study is an attempt to examine in a Greek prison population the correlation of demographic and psychosocial factors with violent and non-violent crime. The prison population sample comprised of 308 males from a total of 1300 prisoners, aged between 18 and 77 years old. The survey was conducted from January 2012 until August 2013 in Korydallos and Domokos prisons. In our prison population sample most of the crimes were non-violent. The prisoners were urban dwellers, of young age, were not married and were in short-term relationships on average. They had completed their military obligations, were not live alone, and have been working in the last six months before being imprisoned, in manual labor. They had low-grade education and poor school achievements, had been brawling with classmates and had history of antisocial behavior (liked to "put fire" and abuse animals). They report good relationships with their parents; however, they had experienced violence in parental relationships and some kind of violence, mainly by the father and secondarily by the mother. They have not been involved in gangs necessarily and have a history from a young age, of alcohol, cannabis and drugs use. Cannabis use history was reported by 208 prisoners (67.5%) and 133 (63.9%) of them started using at the age of 10-15 years old. A total of 179 prisoners (58.5%) reported a history of drug use, about half of them (50.3%) reported being addicted to a combination of drugs. For 40.8% (n=73) drug use was initiated in the age of 10-15 years old, while the largest percentage (46.4%) of prisoners mentioned as starting age 16-20 years old. Although the above features underline the great differences between prison population and the general population, there are no significant associations of these factors with violent or non-violent crime. However, the prisoners with drug use history were 65% less likely to have been sentenced for violent crime. Also, the prisoners exempted from their military duties, were 49% less likely to have committed violent crime.

BackgroundThe association between mental health problems and crime in immigrants has attracted recent academic interest, with results suggesting that there were possible interactions between immigration, schizophrenia, and criminal behavior. However, very few studies have examined these interactions, especially in developing countries that have mass internal immigration. Therefore, this study sought to identify the associations between the sociodemographic, clinical, and criminal factors in migrants and non-migrants with schizophrenia who had been involved in criminal activities in China.MethodsForensic archives of suspects who had been referred for criminal responsibility assessments in the Sichuan West China Forensic Center from January 2015 to December 2019 were reviewed. The sociodemographic, and criminal activity information of the suspects were extracted, while the clinical and social function were measured by the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and Social Disability Screening Schedule (SDSS) based on the archives. A Chi-squared test, a T-test, a Mann-Whitney U test, and Multinomial logistic regression were employed for the statistical analysis.ResultsA total of 552 patients were reviewed and evaluated, 17.2% (n = 95) of which were migrants. The migrant patient group was younger than the non-migrant patient group. The BPRS and SDSS scores for the migrant patient group were lower than for the non-migrant patient group. The migrant patient group had more work experience and more had been employed at the time of the crime than the non-migrant patient group. The unemployed migrant patients were more likely to commit a property-related crime.ConclusionsCompared to the non-migrant schizophrenia patient group, the migrant patient group had less severe psychiatric symptoms and less social function impairments. Employment was an important factor in preventing criminality in patients with schizophrenia, especially for migrant patients. Vocational rehabilitation focuses on developing appropriate employment that can significantly assist in schizophrenia patient recovery, which in turn could reduce their chances of committing crime. Besides, reducing other obstacles to stigma, housing and health insurance would also be beneficial to crime reduction.
