Profitability of value addition to cashew farming households in Nigeria

Abstract: The cashew tree (Anacardium occidentale L.) is an economic crop in Nigeria grown in small plantations in almost every State because of the ease of cultivation and need for minimum attention. Cashew apple wastes on plantations and this reduces cashew farming household incomes. “…Most of respondents had between 10 and 20 years of experience in cashew plantation management in the areas of fair and average production while they had more than 20 years of experience in the high production area. These results are consistent with the findings of many researchers (Lawal et al, 2010;Uwagboe et al, 2010;Balogoun et al, 2014). According to these authors, this reflects the fact that the cashew cultivation remains an activity of old producers whereas young people lack interest in plantations of perennial species.…”

“…This correlates with the findings of Lawal et. al., [26] on the gains of value addition in cashew that the activities on cashew plantation bring much gain to farmers and their household. Source: [11] Seven systems of intercrop were developed by Adeyemi, [21] which involve intercropping cashew with 1 or 2 arable crops simultaneously which were cashew/cassava, maize/plantain, cashew/maize/cassava, cashew/maize/cowpea, cashew/cassava, cashew/maize/plantain, cashew/cassava/plantain, cashew/plantain.…”

“…Cela suppose que les exploitants qui pratiquent la cueillette des produits forestiers seraient plus intéressés sur l'adoption de la RNA afin d'augmenter leurs sources de revenus. Lawal et al (2010) ont montré que l'accès au crédit est un facteur déterminant dans l'adoption de pratiques agricoles. Car, les producteurs ayant un accès facile aux crédits auront tendance à mieux adopter les nouvelles technologies.…”
