Progesterone and 17β-Estradiol Levels during Normal Pregnancy and the Puerperium among Women Attending a Tertiary Health Facility Clinic in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria

Abstract: Introduction: Progesterone and Estrogen are the chief pregnancy hormones. Their levels increase during pregnancy to aid successful maintenance of pregnancy, which depends on maternal tolerance of the fetal semi allograft. Aim: To determine levels of progesterone and 17β-estradiol, at different trimesters during normal pregnancy and the puerperium, which may be used as baseline data for Nigerian women.

“…In the group of boys, we also noted a positive association between gestational age and estradiol level and increased significance after adding MBzP and MEP metabolites to the models. The positive association between estradiol level and gestational age of the neonate is consistent with other studies, as maternal estradiol concentration also increases with increasing gestational weeks [78]. The negative association of gestational age and FT4 level observed in our study is consistent with the reference values for pregnant women [79].…”

“…Following that, its level drops dramatically the day after parturition and remains stable for the next 6 days [ 60 ]. The plasma level of estrogen in the cow is quite low in comparison to other species such as humans (100 pg/mL) and monkeys (300–400 pg/mL) [ 58 , 61 ]. From 90 to 150 days of pregnancy, the plasma content of progesterone in dairy cows increases slightly and is maintained 7 to 14 days prepartum.…”
