Prognosis of Transient Global Amnesia: A Long-Term Follow-Up Study

Abstract: A long-term follow-up study was performed on patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) in order to evaluate the prognosis, the recurrence rate and the occurrence of stroke and dementia. 102 patients (57 women, 45 men; mean age 62.8 ± 9.4 years) were prospectively included and followed up. The follow-up duration ranged between 12 and 241 months with an average value of 82.2 ±51.1 (mean ± SD). The death rate showed no difference from that of sex- and age-matched subjects. TGA recurred in 19 cases (18.63%). On… Show more

“…The present study reproduces fairly the demographic features of previous extensive studies concerning age distribution (60-to-70-year) [25][26][27][28][29][30][31] and the mean age at onset of TGA (62.67 + 9.21 years) [1,17,28,[30][31][32] There was a slight preponderance of women (sex ratio, 1.4), as already observed by others [24,25,[29][30][31][33][34][35], but this finding probably reflects the overpresentation of women among the elderly in our city. As confirmed by previous studies, the mean duration of TGA attacks was about 4 hours [5,6,18] and attacks lasting more than 12 hours were exceptional.…”

“…On the contrary, our findings suggest that nonfocal TNAs are not only a risk factor for stroke, but also for dementia. For 2 small subgroups of nonfocal TNAs-transient global amnesia 11,12 and dizziness 10,29 -it has been reported that the clinical course is usually more benign. Unfortunately, our data do not allow us to determine the prognosis of various subgroups of nonfocal TNAs because of small sample size.…”

“…A recurrence of between 2 and 15% cases has been reported, however [16]. In a case-controlled study [17], vascular risk factors carried no increased risk of TGA (n = 64).…”
