Prognostic Factors for Recovery from Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Retrospective Study

Abstract: Background and ObjectivesThis study aimed to investigate prognostic factors in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL).Subjects and MethodsFrom January 2007 to December 2011, a retrospective chart review identified 494 consecutive patients with ISSNHL. Demographic, audiometric, and clinical data were analyzed using a logistic regression test.ResultsHearing recovery from ISSNHL was significantly associated with factors such as age, duration from onset of symptoms to commencement of t… Show more

“…In 2015, Magnano et al 36 found that only precocity of treatment and up-sloping hearing loss were positive prognostic factors for hearing recovery. A recent retrospective study conducted on 494 patients treated with either IT or oral steroids showed that age, severity of initial pure tone audiometry, duration from onset to treatment and initial speech discrimination were statistically significant prognostic factors related to hearing improvement in SSNHL, and that IT steroid injection as an initial single treatment is comparable to systemic oral steroid administration 37 .…”

“…The prognostic significance of 3D FLAIR images in SSNHL is an interesting matter . With regard to the prognosis of ISSNHL, one study concluded that the presence of an abnormality on labyrinthine MR imaging was a poor prognostic indicator, especially in those with severe or profound hearing loss .…”

“…The prognostic significance of 3D FLAIR images in SSNHL is an interesting matter. 17,18 With regard to the prognosis of ISSNHL, one study concluded that the presence of an abnormality on labyrinthine MR imaging was a poor prognostic indicator, especially in those with severe or profound hearing loss. 16 Another study concluded that a high-intensity signal on 3D FLAIR MRI is a subsidiary phenomenon related to dizziness rather than a single poor prognostic factor, on the assumption that a hyperintensity in vestibular organs is related to the presence of vertigo.…”

“…A 60 évesnél idősebbek prognózisa rosszabb, ezt a megfigyelésünket mind a rövid távú, mind a hosszú távú utánkövetés adatai szignifikáns módon alátámasztották. A témával foglalkozó publikációk idősebb kor esetén kisebb mértékű hallásjavulásról számolnak be [12,13].…”
