Prognostic factors in patients with recurrent or metastatic retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma

Abstract: The median PFS in the 22 patients was 9 months. Microvessel density in tumor tissues, which was evaluated via CD34 expression in 16 cases, and the presence of metastasis on admission were both found to be correlated with PFS in a Kaplan-Meier analysis, but not in a multivariate analysis. The multivariate analysis did, however, show that complete resection of tumors and the FNCLCC (Fédération Nationale des Centres de Lutte Contre Le Cancer) disease grade were independent factors predicting PFS.

“…The FNCLCC system is a commonly used histological grading system for STS, and it is one of the best indicators for predicting the metastasis-free survival and OS ( 21 ). This study was similar to a previous study reported by Qian Li et al., for RLMS patients with recurrent or metastatic disease who had a higher FNCLCC grade experienced worse prognosis ( 22 ). Consistent with previous reports on RPS, patients with multifocal lesions accounted for 23% of all subjects in this study; in addition, the mortality risk of patients with multifocal lesion increased by twice compared with non-multifocal lesion ( 23 ).…”

“…The FNCLCC system is a commonly used histological grading system for soft tissue sarcomas, and it is one of the best indicators for predicting metastasis-free survival and OS [15]. This study is similar to the previous study reported by Qian Li et al, for RLMS patients with recurrent or metastatic disease who had a higher FNCLCC grade experienced worse prognosis [16]. Consistent with previous reports on RPS, patients with multifocal disease accounted for 23% of patients in this study [17], and compared with single-center disease, the risk of death in patients with multifocal disease increased by two times.…”

“…LMS is relatively rare representing 10–20% of soft tissue sarcomas . It can appear at almost all anatomic sites such as the uterus , retroperitoneum , extremities , and blood vessels . Uterine LMS is the most common site‐specific group with an estimated incidence of 0.64 cases per 100,000 women .…”
