Prognostic impact of DNA ploidy pattern, S‐phase fraction (SPF), and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in patients with primary gastric lymphoma

Abstract: These findings indicate that SPF and PCNA are significant prognostic factors in patients with primary gastric lymphomas. However, in the present study, DNA ploidy had no impact on survival in patients with primary gastric lymphomas.

“…Their results confirmed that flow cytometric DNA ploidy status was a significant and independent prognostic factor in patients with colorectal carcinoma. However, in multivariate analysis, SPF was the most significant prognostic factor, whereas DNA ploidy was not found to be an independent predictor of survival in bladder carcinoma and primary gastric lymphomas (Belessi et al, 2003;Falkman et al, 2004). In our study, no correlation was found between DNA ploid status, SPF, and clinicopathologic parameters; the correlation of DNA diploidy and SPF with clinical prognosis in colorectal carcinoma needs further study.…”

“…Our data are consistent with those published by Aoyagi et al [25], who observed a significant correlation of PCNA PI with depth of invasion, histological differentiation and the clinical stadium of the disease, thus stating that PCNA index is a good prognostic factor in gastric cancers. Many investigators have found Ki-67 and PCNA to be prognostic factors in tumours of the stomach [13][14][15]22,23,[26][27][28][29].…”

“…In some of them the only finding is S-phase prognostic value only in univariate but not in the multivariate analysis (11,20). Joensuu et al (18) found aneuploidy as a negative prognostic value but only in univariate analysis.…”

“…Among these factors are the clinical stage, high-grade histologic type, serosal involvement, or proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression (4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11). Flow cytometry (FC) is a quantitative method of DNA content assessment.…”
