Prognostic significance of circulating tumor cells in advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with docetaxel and gemcitabine

Abstract: CTCs ≥2 at baseline were detected only in 24 % of this group of patients with advanced NSCLC and poor performance status. No significant differences in PFS and OS between patients with or without CTCs at baseline were observed.

“…Our results contrast with the majority of reported data in NSCLC which shows that patients treated with chemotherapy had worse OS and PFS with a higher CTC number [18,31,32,33,34,35,36]. Only one study by Juan et al [37] reported similar findings in a group of advanced NSCLC treated with docetaxel and gemcitabine. In particular, the authors found a longer median PFS and OS in patients with an increased CTC number (CTCs ≥ 2/7.5 mL) [37].…”

“…For example, in SCLC the total numbers of CTCs were significantly decreased following a single dose of chemotherapy (166,167). Similar results were observed in patients with NSCLC (5,(168)(169)(170). In contrast, an increase in CTC numbers is indicative of failure to respond to therapy.…”

“…CTC assessment with the CellSearch system was not prognostic in a study that analyzed 37 fragile patients (36). In fact, no significant association between CTC count and both PFS and OS was observed using a threshold of two CTC to discriminate between high-and low-CTC count.…”
