Prognostic significance of Leu-M1 immunostaining in papillary carcinomas of the thyroid gland

Abstract: Leu-M1 antigen is a monocyte/granulocyte-related marker known to be consistently expressed in the Reed-Sternberg cells of patients with Hodgkin's disease. Recently, however, the presence of Leu-M1 has also been noted in tumour cells of a variety of non-haematopoietic neoplasms, most of them adenocarcinomas. The biological significance of this aberrant reaction has not been clarified. We have been able to demonstrate marked epithelial Leu-M1 immunoreactivity (greater than 15% tumour cells positively stained) in… Show more

“…This difference is established on the detection of calcitonin, carcinoembrionic antigen, calcitonine gene related peptide, chromogranin A, Neuron-specific enolase, and other substances in medullary, but not in nonmedullary carcinomas [21,23,27]. In contrast, thyroglobulin, which is detected in papillary and follicular tumors, is hardly found in medullary carcinomas [19,21]. The follicular cells, from which the epithelial thyroid carcinomas arise, derive from the endotherm.…”

“…This latter study also reported that there was also less SSEA-1 immunoreactivity observed in follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinomas (FVPTCs) (12). The presence of SSEA-1 reactivity has been suggested as an unfavorable prognostic sign in thyroid medullary and papillary carcinoma (13-16). …”
