Prognostic significance of red blood cell distribution width in gastrointestinal disorders

Abstract: The red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a routinely measured and automatically reported blood parameter, which reflects the degree of anisocytosis. Recently, the baseline RDW was found to have clinical significance for assessing clinical outcome and severity of various pathological conditions including cardiovascular diseases, sepsis, cancers, leukemia, renal dysfunction and respiratory diseases. A myriad of factors, most of which ill-defined, have an impact on the red cell population dynamics (i.e., pr… Show more

“…It is a valuable measurement in many pathological diseases, ranging from sepsis to cancer, and from kidney dysfunction to cardiovascular disease, and it has also been shown in the literature to be an important inflammatory marker. [10] It has been identified as an important marker in determining the mortality rate and length of hospital stay in patients in many clinical trials. [17] In a study conducted with 322 AP patients, Gülen et al [18] considered RDW values to be significant for early prediction of prognosis in nontraumatic AP cases.…”

“…There are also a few studies in the literature reporting that the CRP/albumin ratio can be used in this respect. [9,10] The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of RDW and CRP/albumin values, both of which are inexpensive, easy-to-access, and reproducible markers available from routine blood tests, in predicting the prognosis of the patients hospitalized due to AP.…”

“…However we determined a significant decrease in MCV levels in patients with colon cancer who were treated with FUFA. Red cell distribution width is known to be associated with systemic inflammation (15). Increase in RDW values have been suggested as a diagnostic and prognostic tool in colon cancer patients (16,17).…”

“…High RDW was more pronounced in patients with right-sided colon cancer [ 24 ]. High RDW was also found to be associated with an increased risk of mortality in CRC patients [ 25 ]. In CRC patients, slow bleeding from cancer is thought to cause iron deficiency anemia and stools positive for the occult blood test, and it is observed more in elderly patients.…”
