Prognostic significance of serum thymidine phosphorylase concentration in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: Assessment of coronary lesion length using visual estimation or quantitative coronary angiography can be unreliable. We tested the accuracy of a new handheld caliper device to measure lesion length in a bench‐top model and in eight patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Caliper–derived length measurements were compared to the known reference distance in the bench‐top model and visual or intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)‐derived measurements in vivo. In the coronary model, caliper‐derived m… Show more

“…A landmark study in 2002 had concluded that SdThdPase (s-thymidine phosphorylase), a potent angiogenic factor, is markedly elevated in patients with advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma [13]. This enzyme is produced by tumor cell lines and is intimately associated with neovascularization, a hallmark of tumor progression and metastasis [14,15].…”

“…Elevated expression of TP protein and mRNA is observed in various cancers and is associated with poor prognosis (12,13,17,19,21). TP is also overexpressed in NPC specimens and is regulated by hnRNP K in NPC cells.…”

“…17) Serum concentrations of some types of growth factors are useful to predict treatment response and patients' outcome in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). 18,19) These serum markers may complement the clinical impact of TNM staging. The purpose of this study was therefore to determine both the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of S-MK in these patients.…”
