Prognostic significance of tissue and serum HER2 and MUC1 in canine mammary cancer

Abstract: The aim of our study was to compare serum levels and protein tissue of human epidermal growth factor receptor–2 proto-oncogene (HER2) and mucin 1 (MUC1) using an antigen-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunohistochemistry (IHC) in canine mammary carcinomas and investigate how the 2 markers correlate with dogs with metastasis and without metastasis to a regional lymph node. Forty-eight female dogs were selected, including 14 with non-metastatic cancer, 14 with lymph node metastasis, and 20 health… Show more

“…According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) there are approximately 14.1 million new cancer cases in the world and 8.2 million cancer deaths. Breast cancer is the major cause of women cancer mortality, and for female dogs, the prevalence of this type of cancer has increased over the years, with malignant lesions varying from 26% to 73% . Besides the importance of this disease to the canine species, there are a number of common features shared by mammary gland tumours in canines and humans.…”

“…There is an increasing interest in veterinary oncology to identify improved tools for the monitoring of tumour development and therapy response . Melatonin (N‐acetyl‐5‐methoxytryptamine), is a natural hormone primarily synthesized and secreted by mammalian pineal gland as by many other extra‐pineal organs, including the retina, gastrointestinal tract, skin, bone marrow and lymphocytes .…”

“…Although data confirmed by Dutr confirmed the correlation between EGF levels and neoplasia (26), research data published by Campos suggested that the blood serum level of EGF could not be used effectively used as a neoplastic marker as its concentration was not statistically significantly different in dogs with tumours when compared to the control group (34).…”
