“…patients had a worse DFS that was not statistically significant to the old N2 classification (28.7% vs 42.7%; P = .644) and was significantly different to the previous N1 classification (28.7% vs 58.9%; P = .003). The incidence of TDs in the present study was similar to previous studies, 8,9,16,17 however, it was higher than a recently published review on TDs and N1c. 18 The results in the present study are supported by the use of standardized pathological reports that systematically mentioned TDs and other poor prognostic factors.…”

“…6 N1c category represents 5% to 10% of rectal cancers 4,7 with TDs seen in around 20% of all adenocarcinomas. 8 TDs are associated with poor prognostic markers such as a high T stage (T3-T4 stage) 7,9 and a higher N stage. 10,11 60% of patients with stage IV disease have TDs 12 with a further 72% of CRC with PNI having TDs also.…”

“…In addition, the CSS of N1c patients was significantly worse compared with N0 patients, confirming the application of the N1c category in LARC patients with neo‐CRT. Recently, Bouquot et al included 1122 colorectal patients to evaluate the impact of N1c category in both colon and rectal cancers . N1c category were identified only in 57 patients (24 colon cancers and 33 rectal cancers) and was associated with rectal cancer, advanced tumor stage (~90% T3‐T4), and synchronous metastases (40%).…”

“…Moreover, lymph nodes may be difficult to differentiate from tumour deposits when normal lymph node tissue has been completely replaced by tumour. Recent studies also indicate that tumour deposits (N1c) are associated with worse survival than metastatic lymph nodes when considering both types of lesions in isolation [ 9 12 ].…”
