“…Episodes of PCP were associated with a significantly increased BAL fluid percentage of lymphocytes as well as levels of albumin indicating ongoing vascular leakage of plasma. However, neither BAL neutrophilia nor increase in IL-8 concentration as reported in PCP in acquired immune deficiency syndrome patients was found in the present study [29].…”

“…Symptoms of Pneumocystis pneumonia in non-HIV patients often do not begin until after CS have been tapered off (36). Increased levels of neutrophils and IL-8, a potent chemoattractant, in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of HIV patients with Pneumocystis pneumonia are associated with a worse prognosis (6). HIV patients with Pneumocystis pneumonia experience worsening of respiratory function soon after receiving anti-Pneumocystis drugs, and this can be prevented by CS (1).…”

“…Pneumocystis pneumonia remains a significant cause of mortality during AIDS, despite highly active antiretroviral therapy (3)(4)(5). Severe Pneumocystis pneumonia is characterized by intense lung inflammation involving CD8 ϩ cells and neutrophils, impairing gas exchange (6)(7)(8)(9).…”
