Prognostic Value of p53 Protein Accumulation in Cancer Cell Nuclei in Adenocarcinoma of the Uterine Cervix

Abstract: Adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix (CxAd) is one of the most distressing malignancies of the female reproductive system because of its tendency to spread aggressively and to be resistant to radiation and systemic therapies. To clarify the prognostic significance of p53 alteration in CxAd, we immunohistochemically examined the incidence of p53 nuclear accumulation, which is considered to be mostly parallel with p53 gene mutation, and its association with clinicopathological parameters in 26 patients with CxAd… Show more

“…Our group has reported that p53 overexpression has a statistically significant correlation with poor outcome of cervical squamous cell carcinoma (27). Tsuda et al (7) found that p53 overexpression in adenocarcinoma of the cervix had a statistically significant correlation with poor outcome. Conversely, Lu et al (9) reported that p53 expression did not have any significant correlation with the prognosis of cervical adenocarcinoma.…”

“…In addition, certain abnormalities in tumor-associated genes have been shown to correlate with the clinical behavior of the malignancy. Tsuda et al (7) reported that overexpression of the p53 gene product correlated with a poor prognosis. A study by Kihara et al (8) showed that overexpression of the c-erbB2 proto-oncogene product was greater in patients with advanced clinical stage disease and indicated a poor prognosis.…”

“…A recent immunohistochemical study showed that progesterone receptor status was associated with a favorable prognosis (1). Tsuda et al (2) reported that overexpression of the p53 gene product correlated with a poor prognosis. “…Mutations in this gene inactivate this tumor suppressor activity and are related to the tumor progression and patients prognosis. Oka et al [2] and Tsuda et al [3] reported a significant correlation of p53 overexpression and poor outcome of cervical cancer. Conversely, in the studies of Lu et al [4] and Yamashita et al [5] p53 overexpression was not correlated with prognosis.…”
