“…Experts such as Xanthopoulos A have found that RDW is a powerful predictive indicator in patients. [ 25 ] Dai L et al [ 26 ] found that in critically ill patients with internal medicine, the higher the RDW, the higher the death rate. Therefore, RDW can be used as an indicator to determine the severity of a patient’s condition.…”

“…RDW is an index of erythrocyte size heterogeneity, MCV measures the average volume of circulatory red blood cells, and abnormal RDW and MCV values are associated with a higher risk of transfusion 33 . Dai et al found that patients with macrocytic anemia had higher median hemoglobin levels (i.e., were less anemic) than patients with microcytic anemia, yet they were the most likely to receive RBC transfusions 34 . Anemia is one of the most important variables for predicting transfusion risk, but RDW and MCV provide additional prognostic value.…”

“…Jeffrey and colleagues also identi ed speci c thresholds for Hb and HCT in their study that can be used to guide PRBCs infusion [14]. RDW served as an important variable in the perioperative transfusion risk of patients undergoing cardiac surgery [15]. In Australia and New Zealand, platelet counts, INR and brinogen concentrations are included into the guidelines to direct PRBCs transfusion in intensive care units [16].…”
