Prognostic value of systemic inflammation‐based markers in advanced pancreatic cancer

Abstract: Our findings suggest that the NLR, PLR and mGPS derived from routine blood tests can be used as clinically meaningful biomarkers to stratify advanced pancreatic cancer patients into different prognostic groups.

“…The clinical utility of new diagnostic markers of malignancies must be evaluated to identify potentially useful methods for prognosis and treatment monitoring. In recent years, accumulating evidence has elucidated the role of inflammation-based prognostic scores, including PNI, NLR, PLR, PI, mGPS and GPS in cancer patient prognosis (12)(13)(14)(15). Although several studies have identified CAR as a prognostic factor for patients with various types of tumors (6)(7)(8), the prognostic value in patients with ESCC remained unclear (16).…”

“…(7,(20)(21)(22). It was reported that the N/L ratio was a poor prognostic factor in non-small cell lung cancer, acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure, advanced pancreatic cancer, and biliary tract cancer (12)(13)(14)23). In patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, the N/L ratio is associated with the severity of chronic heart failure (22).…”

“…White blood cell (WBC) counts, neutrophil counts, lymphocyte counts, age, sex, and mutation types of patients were extracted. The N/L ratio was calculated by dividing the absolute neutrophil counts with the absolute lymphocyte counts, obtained from the differential WBC count (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17).…”

“…Among various immunological processes, neutrophils and lymphocytes are reported to have a vital role in tumor inflammation and immunology. It has been demonstrated that the peripheral blood neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), or more recently the derived NLR (dNLR), may be a reliable prognostic marker in various types of cancer, including PDAC (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18), However, the use of the dNLR in predicting susceptibility to chemotherapy has not been evaluated. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate whether the dNLR is a reliable predictive marker for gemcitabine response in patients with unresectable PDAC.…”
