Prognostic Value of Tumor Deposits for Disease-Free Survival in Patients With Stage III Colon Cancer: A Post Hoc Analysis of the IDEA France Phase III Trial (PRODIGE-GERCOR)

Abstract: PURPOSE Tumor deposits (TDs) seem to affect the prognosis of patients with colon cancer (CC). In the seventh edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer TNM staging system for CC, the presence of TDs is only considered in the absence of lymph node metastases (LNMs). In the era of personalized duration of histopathologic criteria-based adjuvant therapy, this could potentially lead to a decrease in the prognostic prediction accuracy. PATIENTS AND METHODS A post hoc analysis of all pathologic reports from … Show more

“…Previous publications have suggested a potential pathophysiologic relationship between TD and lymphovascular or perineural invasion, which are high-risk features of stage II colon cancer. 10,12,19 The IDEA France analysis observed a significant interaction between TD and these features, but the relatively high amount of missing data did not permit firm conclusions to be drawn. 12 Here, the presence or absence of lymphovascular and perineural invasion was reported for 94.9% of patients.…”

The negative prognostic impact of TD remained significant whether the tumor exhibited lymphovascular or perineural invasion or not.…”

“…Stage III staging [5][6][7][8][9]; to this end, adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) has been recommended by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and supported by others as the standard of care to improve disease-free survival and overall survival (OS) in N1c disease [3,7,[9][10][11][12][13]. The increased risks posed by TD remain incompletely addressed [14].…”
