Prognostic value of vascularity index for the diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid disease

Abstract: Aim: to determine thyroid vascularity in healthy subjects and patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD), and assess its sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of AITD. Methods: High-sensitivity color flow Doppler sonography (HSCFDS) was used to estimate the thyroid intraparenchymal vascularity in 31 euthyroid patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HD), 33 hypothyroid patients with HD, 13 hyperthyroid patients with Graves' disease, and in 34 healthy controls. Images obtained from the ultrasound uni… Show more

“…In contrast, thyroid vascularity, as expressed by the left TL VI, was found to be significantly increased in patients with rheumatic diseases (group-1, 2, 3); however, only left ITA PSV was significantly increased in group-1 patients compared to healthy controls (group-4). Group-1 patients demonstrated a tendency to increased vascularity (left TL VI and left ITA PSV) and reduced echogenicity that are both considered to represent early features of AITD [11][12][13].…”

“…2a-c). Left TL VI [5.57 % was considered suggestive of autoimmune thyroiditis [12]. Thyroid blood flow was assessed following at least 5 measurements of each left and right ITA.…”

“…A qualitative assessment of the measurement of echogenicity and its impact on the results obtained in the classification of Hashimoto’s disease was conducted using a statistical approach [41,42]. A discriminant analysis was used for the following five options: …”

“…We introduce an experimental method, based on the pixel density of the pleural effusion's sonographic image. We employed the hypoechogenicity index, which has been widely used in ultrasound studies of the thyroid and its diseases but not in the lung (7). To achieve standardization in our method we used the same ultrasound depth and dynamic range for all our patients.…”
