Prognostic Values of Platelet-Associated Indicators in Resectable Cervical Cancer

Abstract: Background:Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer mortality in women, which seriously threatens the health of women worldwide. Platelet (PLT)-related parameters, including PLT count, mean platelet volume (MPV), plateletcrit (PCT), and platelet distribution width (PDW), are correlated with tumor prognosis. Methods:In total, 110 patients with cervical carcinoma were recruited in this study. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the receiver operating characteristic analysis cutoff v… Show more

“…Shen et al [30] and Qin et al [31] reported that a decreased mean platelet volume was associated with CC development and could even be used as a screening tool. In patients with CC, a decreased mean platelet volume is also associated with a poorer prognosis, indicating more aggressive or advanced disease [32,33]. Platelets have complex relationships with cancer cells and contribute to tumor growth, angiogenesis, invasion, and dissemination [34,35].…”

“…It is already known that thrombocytosis can be a prognostic factor in gynecological tumors. [15][16][17] One study found that pretreatment thrombocytosis may be an independent prognosis predictor in women with cervical cancer and may be a prognostic biomarker. 18 Another study demonstrated that the association of platelet count and FIGO stage increased the prediction performance of FIGO staging and may provide additional risk stratification for operable cervical cancer patients.…”

“…3 The main risk factor for the development of cervical cancer is infection by the HPV virus (human papillomavirus) and its oncogenic subtypes. HPV DNA is found in about 97% of cervical tumors and subtypes 16,18,31,35,39,45,51,52,56, and 58 cause the majority of invasive tumors. 4 HPV has been suggested as the first identifiable and necessary cause of cancer in humans, that is, cervical neoplasia does not develop in the absence of persistent HPV DNA.…”

“…Studies have shown that PLR is a negative prognostic marker in advanced cancer [6]. MPV is associated platelet activation and production as well as the mean platelet volume in the blood [7,8]. Studies revealed that MPV is closely related with many types of cancer such as colon, thyroid and, renal cell carcinoma [9][10][11].…”
