Objective This systematic review evaluates and summarizes existing eating disorder (ED) prevention programs in Latin American countries. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted using the Cochrane Controlled Trial Register, PubMed, and Virtual Health Library databases up to and including July 31, 2022. All ED prevention studies published in English, Spanish or Portuguese were eligible, regardless of the study design, sample characteristics, and type of prevention programs. The Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias criteria were used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. Results Twenty‐two studies were included. Most were pilot studies that were nonrandomized, had a high risk of bias, were from Mexico and Brazil, and employed selective interventions. Dissonance‐based programs and social cognitive theory were the commonly used approaches in interventions, and most of them were tested in adolescent girls and women. Short follow‐ups were used, varying from 1 to 6 months. Many found significant decreases after the intervention and/or at follow‐up in ED/disordered eating risk behaviors/symptoms, negative affect, body‐ideal internalization, and body image disturbances. Conclusions This review highlights promising efforts to prevent EDs among Latin American countries. Some barriers in conducting research include funding restrictions, laws that do not allow remuneration or compensation for participants, and high costs of training. Nonetheless, the outcomes of the programs developed and evaluated so far are positive enough to merit further work on ED prevention. Efforts for future researchers should recruit samples with diverse characteristics, use robust designs and data analysis techniques, and expand the accessibility of prevention programs. Public Significance Statement The development of effective eating disorder (ED) prevention programs that can be broadly implemented is a public health priority. Nevertheless, there is limited evidence regarding the characteristics of ED prevention programs and their efficacy among Latin American countries. In the present study, we reviewed existing ED prevention programs adopted in Latin America, described their characteristics and outcomes, noted the limitations of available programs, and discussed the implications of these findings for efforts to prevent the development of EDs in Latin America. The outcomes of the programs developed and evaluated so far are positive enough to merit the development and rigorous evaluation of future programs and their broad dissemination in Latin American countries. En medio de los conflictos sociales, como resultado de la crisis de valores, es necesario revitalizar el papel de la familia y la escuela. El presente ensayo tiene por objetivo analizar la formación de valores en estudiantes de la Enseñanza Básica, en aras de contribuir a su mejor comportamiento; con este propósito se desarrolló una investigación de tipo revisión bibliográfica, sustentado en los métodos hermenéutico y análisis de contenido, los que permitieron la indagación, análisis, interpretación y resumen de artículos de revistas científicas, libros, documentos y tesis de grado. Entre los principales hallazgos se destacan: 1) La familia y la escuela son dos pilares fundamentales donde descansa la formación de valores de las nuevas generaciones. 2) Las instituciones educativas han de implementar políticas y estrategias direccionadas a la formación de valores, donde se reconozca al alumno como centro y eje principal del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje, considerándolo como una persona con un gran potencial de dignidad humana, para de esta forma contribuir a la formación de ciudadanos como seres humanos positivos, responsables, honestos, amigables, participativos y cooperativos, entre otras cualidades. 3) Se ha de educar desde la instrucción, relacionando el sistema de valores con los contenidos de las disciplinas pedagógicas.

Cultural adaptations of cognitive behavioural therapy for Latin American patients: unexpected findings from a systematic review

The current literature extensively recommends making cultural adaptations to psychological therapies, in order to address the differences in values, beliefs and attitudes that patients from different ethnic groups might hold. Although this approach has shown positive outcomes in some settings, it is not well established yet whether such adaptations are needed for all therapies and in all cultures. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to systematically review the literature regarding culturally adapted and ‘conventional’ cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for Latin American patients, within Latin American and non-Latin American countries. Sixty empirical studies regarding the effectiveness of culturally adapted and conventional CBT were included in this review. The included studies were carried out in Latin American and non-Latin American countries. The information from all studies was synthesized and assessed, including intervention effect sizes, patient retention rates, methodological quality of the papers, and the type of cultural adaptation made to the therapy. There were no differences between the sets of studies in terms of effectiveness, retention rates, methodological quality, or proportion of statistically significant interventions. Most of the cultural adaptations were peripheral or unspecified. The evidence to date indicates that both conventional and culturally adapted CBT offer the same benefits for Latin American patients in terms of effectiveness and retention rates. Rather than focusing on cultural adaptations, clinicians are encouraged to improve the way they deliver CBT through training and supervision. Key learning aims (1) Cultural adaptations of CBT do not seem to offer any significant benefits to conventional, non-adapted CBT in Latin American patients. (2) Most of the adaptations made to CBT for Latin American patients are either peripheral or not disclosed. (3) We discuss the implications of adapting CBT for Latin American patients when there is no apparent need to do so.
