Programmable Multifunctional RF/Microwave Circuit for Antenna and Filter Operation

Abstract: This paper describes a multi-functional microwave device that can be reconfigured to behave either as a filter or an antenna. The device is based around a single resonant element, referred to as a building block element that is connected to 4 ports. The resonant element is a microstrip square patch working in the 2.45 GHz unlicensed Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) band used for IEEE 802.11 WiFi. The proposed building block is simple in its design and construction. The paper also presents devices compos… Show more

“…Table 2 compares the performance of the proposed microwave device with other functional devices. The total efficiency of the proposed microwave device is higher than all the devices that perform radiation including 24–28 . Furthermore, the insertion loss of the proposed microwave device is lower than the functional changeable devices including Kelly and colleagues 21,26–28 .…”

“…Unfortunately, achieving antennas that can implement multiple communication standards operating across many gigahertz of bandwidth has remained a challenge, as the antenna’s impedance, bandwidth, radiation pattern, and efficiency are all highly interdependent and interlinked with its geometry and size 9 , 10 . Antennas with reconfigurability have been an area of intense research 11 19 , as they enable desirable operational flexibility that can more efficiently utilize the limited radio spectrum 20 and also offer the ability to cope with complicated RF environments 21 .…”

“…Radiofrequency (RF) microwave filter 1 is an indispensable part of satellite communication, 2 wireless communication 3,4 and electronic countermeasures system. As the most important RF components in 5G base stations, [5][6][7] the microwave filter's 8,9 main function is to select the frequency of the received signal.…”
