Programs for fixed-time artificial insemination in South American beef cattle

Abstract: Fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) has been widely applied in South America within the last 20 years for the genetic improvement of commercial beef herds. Most FTAI treatments for beef cattle used in South America are based on the use of progesterone (P4) releasing devices and estradiol to synchronize follicle wave emergence, with pregnancies per AI (P/AI) ranging from 40 to 60%. More recent protocols focusing on extending the interval from device removal to FTAI (i.e. increasing the growing period of t… Show more

“…The present study revealed a direct influence of the weight gain on cows' fertility, because the females that gained up to 73 Kg had a conception rate 13.7% higher than those that had not gained in weight. Studies have observed that in postpartum cows, all weight loss or gain is reflected as a variation of the body score (Bó et al, 2018;Cutaia & Bó, 2004).…”

“…The Fixed Time Artificial Insemination (FTAI) is an extremely useful tool in livestock, since it optimizes reproductive management (Baruselli et al, 2017;Bó et al, 2018). In such a way, this biotechnology provides the insemination of cows at the beginning Development, v. 9, n. 9, e907998091, 2020 (CC BY 4.0) | ISSN 2525-3409 | DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.33448/rsd-v9i9.8091 of the breeding season, regardless of the cyclical state and thus eliminates the need for estrus detection and ensures greater genetic gain to the herd and profitability to livestock (Baruselli, Reis, Marques, Nasser, & Bó, 2004;Oosthuizen et al, 2020;Taponen, 2009).…”

“…A terapia hormonal é a técnica mais utilizada para indução de ovulação em novilhas, pois utiliza-se hormônios, que modulam o funcionamento do eixo hipotálamo-hipofisário, aumentando a secreção de gonadotrofinas e induzindo a puberdade (BÓ et al, 2018).…”

“…In timed artificial insemination (TAI) programs, the use of resynchronization provides the opportunity for a second round of AIs and may potential increases the reproductive effictiveness of the herd [1]. This strategy is of great importance, since in addition to increasing the number of calves born from artificial insemination, eliminates the need for estrous observation [2][3][4], reduces the number of bulls in the farm [5].…”
