Programs in Biomedical Engineering Education: How to Improve it

Abstract: Abstract-This work collects information on educational models applied in the teaching of biomedical engineering, in several countries. There is no universal uniformity in teaching subjects and contents of the courses. The result internationally is great variability in the curriculum, the analysis is based in areas covers and didactic modalities. We used information available on the Web sites of careers and we use the AWP model as valuation method. Some optimization proposals are made, based on the results of p… Show more

“…On the other hand there are careers very involved in the design of medical devices, since their ties with the medical equipment industry is a priority; While in most Latin American countries, the most demanding professional field is related to biomedical technologies in the hospital world, a specialty known as clinical engineering [11]. Both in management of devices as in evaluation and certification, these tasks are increasingly important, because the impact of errors and failures of devices (technical iatrogeny) is critical today.…”

“…Over time, BME programs have grown significantly, with more than 90 available programs. These programs offer a broad range of areas of specialisations, such as bioinformatics, bioinstrumentation, biomaterials, biomechanics, clinical engineering, medical imaging, informatics, and systems physiology, among others [4], [8], [9]. Biomedical engineers have become crucial in public and private healthcare, the electromedical industry, medical devices and health-biomedical research centres [10].…”
