Progress in Exploration, Development and Utilization of Oil Shale in China

Abstract: The huge oil shale resources in China have gradually attracted widespread attention due to the shortage of oil and gas resources in the country and the rapid recovery of world oil prices. A nationwide prospecting survey of oil shale in China was conducted for the first time during a period from 2003 to 2006, reporting on around 719.9 billion tons of oil shale. After that, many large oil shale deposits have been discovered in the country, and the exploration of oil shale is flourishing. Although the total shale… Show more

“…1 Oil shale deposits in China are primarily found in Jilin, Liaoning, and Guangdong provinces, with Jilin being the wealthiest. 2 Oil shale deposits are typically found at shallow depths and have low reservoir temperatures, making them relatively easy to exploit compared to conventional oil and gas reserves. However, the hydrocarbon-bearing porous media in oil shale contain solid, nonflowing kerogen that must be cracked into smaller, flowable hydrocarbon molecules through heating.…”

“…Defined as a high-ash solid combustible organic rock, oil shale is typically a finegrained sedimentary rock (usually shale) with a high kerogen content that is sufficient for fractionating a significant amount of oil [1][2][3]. It has more than 40% ash content and 3.5% oil content and is regarded as a typical unconventional oil and gas resource.…”

“…Besides, it is also the raw material for construction, and cement and chemical fertilizers production. Currently, the research on oil shale mainly focuses on its comprehensive utilization and geological exploration [8][9][10][11][12]. Despite its abundant reserves and versatility of applications, oil shale exploration and utilization face a number of challenges, including high costs and environmental pollution.…”
