Progress in soil geography I: Reinvigoration

Abstract: The geography of soil is more important today than ever before. Models of environmental systems and myriad direct field applications depend on accurate information about soil properties and their spatial distribution. Many of these applications play a critical role in managing and preparing for issues of food security, water supply, and climate change. The capability to deliver soil maps with the accuracy and resolution needed by land use planning, precision agriculture, as well as hydrologic and meteorologic … Show more

“…132 The quality of our maps depends on the sampling design used to gather information, methods used, the models used to project point data across a 2-or 3-dimensional mapping product, and the skill and training of those who create the maps. 98,[133][134][135] Therefore, additional research is needed to investigate best soil mapping practices including data collection, analysis, manipulation, and display. 136…”

“…Despite this, it was only relatively recently (in the 19th and 20th centuries) that the foundations of modern soil science were laid by the Russian school of landscape studies [7]. Soil geography-a branch of soil science that includes geostatistics-deals with the spatial variability and distribution of soil properties, the patterns and causes of soil distributions, and their relationship with humans [8]. It also involves the identification and classification of soils, the assessment of the human and natural factors that impact pedogenesis and soil distribution, and uses soil mapping as a basic methodological tool [7].…”

“…), climatic/bioclimatic maps, and administrative units (states, regions, etc.) in order to permit scientifically sound comparisons (see Ibáñez and Bockheim and references therein; Ibáñez, 2017; Miller, Brevik, Pereira, & Schaetzl, 2019). Such analyses have also been conducted for landforms, vegetation, etc., at the landscape level (e.g., Ibáñez et al 2005a, b; Ibáñez & Effland, 2011; Magurran, 2004; San‐José Martínez & Caniego, 2013; among others).…”
