Progress in the Preclinical and Clinical Study of Resveratrol for Vascular Metabolic Disease

Abstract: Vascular metabolic dysfunction presents in various diseases, such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. Due to the high prevalence of these diseases, it is important to explore treatment strategies to protect vascular function. Resveratrol (RSV), a natural polyphenolic phytochemical, is regarded as an agent to regulate metabolic pathways. Many studies have proven that RSV has beneficial effects on improving metabolism in endothelial cells (ECs) and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), which… Show more

“…In the past, resveratrol may have promoted atherosclerosis in rabbits with hypercholesterolemia ( 43 ). However, resveratrol currently has gained increased attention because of its beneficial effects on improving metabolism in endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells in many preclinical and clinical studies on atherosclerosis, metabolic disease, hypertension, and ischemia ( 44 ).…”

“…Current appraisals have determined that RSV has a valuable influence on repairing metabolism in endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells. The regulation of cell metabolism activity is connected to the suppression of glucose uptake, inhibition of glycolysis, prevention against damages caused by fatty acids through stimulation of fatty acid oxidation, reduction in lipogenesis by increasing lipolysis, and elevation of glutamine uptake and synthesis [178]. Vascular smooth muscle cell senescence is a critical element that stimulates the progression of CVDs.…”
