Progress of Nanomaterials-Based Photothermal Therapy for Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the top 15 most prevalent cancers worldwide. However, the current treatment models for OSCC (e.g., surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and combination therapy) present several limitations: damage to adjacent healthy tissue, possible recurrence, low efficiency, and severe side effects. In this context, nanomaterial-based photothermal therapy (PTT) has attracted extensive research attention. This paper reviews the latest progress in the application of biological nan… Show more

“…OSCC is a common malignant tumor originating from the squamous epithelial tissue of the oral mucosa. [12] The harmful effects of OSCC are primarily manifested in the destruction of oral structures and functions, invasion, and metastasis to the lymphatic system and other organs, leading to a decreased survival rate, especially when metastasis occurs in the cervical lymph nodes. [13,14] In-depth exploration of the molecular mechanisms of OSCC is crucial for targeted drug research.…”

“…Though these nanomaterials have excellent therapeutic efficacies in most cases, the complication lies in their non-biodegradability and cytotoxicity, which limits their application in clinical translation and therapeutics 21 . Organic nanomaterials have better bio-compatibility than inorganic nanomaterials 22 . To attain a greater photothermal effect with biocompatibility, biodegradability, low cytotoxicity, and early removal from the body, different bio-nanomaterials are synthesized, which are discussed in the following section also listed in Table 1 .…”

“…Although various treatment modalities have been developed for OSCC, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, their effectiveness in improving patient survival has been limited [4]. Furthermore, these treatments often come with significant side effects, further complicating OSCC patient management [5]. Hence, there is a pressing need for novel therapeutic approaches that can address the limitations of the existing treatment regimens.…”
