“…Power swings can be synchronous (synchronous generators do not lose synchronism) or asynchronous (synchronous generators lose synchronism) depending on the severity of the disturbances [3]. At the generation side, when the generator or group of generators is exposed to the asyn-chronous power swing, instability may occur, and the generator experiences the pole slipping, which can cause stress on the system and pole (coil) [1]. Deep synchronous or asynchronous power swings are accompanied by massive changes in voltages and currents, which pose a serious threat to power system operation.…”

“…Power swing (PS) is a transient phenomenon in the power systems that interferes with operational zones of distance relays and leads to mal‐operation of these relays and disconnection of healthy lines of the power system. This might cause network instability and eventually overall system blackouts, as happened in 2003–2012 in countries such as Malaysia, Italy, Brazil, and India [1–5]. In the distance relays, a function called PS blocking (PSB) is used [6] to prevent mal‐operation during PS events.…”

“…A consolidated review on distance relay blocking schemes to prevent maloperation during power swings is discussed in [2]. The problem of zone 3 distance relay maloperation are addressed in [3] with possible solutions in three categories.…”
