“…The reemergence of WPV cases in Pakistan after 14 months with no case detection has uncovered transmission in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the most historically challenging area. This report describes Pakistan's progress toward polio eradication during January 2021-July 2022 and updates previous reports (4,5). As of August 20, 2022, all but one of the 14 WPV1 cases in Pakistan during 2022 have been reported from North Waziristan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.…”

“…The rates of symptomatic poliomyelitis cases among the infected individuals were around 0.7% even in those infected with wild polioviruses (108) and much higher asymptomatic infection rates for cVDPVs are expected in communities with polio immunization under current realistic conditions. To supplement AFP surveillance, the importance of environmental surveillance to monitor the transmission of wild and vaccine-derived polioviruses is currently increasing, especially in the settings where AFP surveillance is not functioning well for various reasons (99,109,110). In the WPR, the attempt to apply the environmental surveillance for OPV-derived polioviruses was pioneered in Japan (111,112), and the methodological approaches have been transferred and introduced in China (48,62-64,110).…”
