Project management and action research: two sides of the same coin?

Abstract: In terms of originality, this represents a conceptual piece of work that puts forward constructs that have, to date, not featured in the health care literature. Its value lies in suggesting further options for organisational-oriented health care research.

“…However, these frameworks say little about the process itself. This is where action research as a process methodology complements all frameworks for change management—regardless of context (Whitehead, ). Thus, implementation science focuses on implementing research evidence in healthcare practice and policy‐making while action research has a broader focus on what is researched and for whom, who creates what is researched and how those most affected are co‐designers, co‐implementers, co‐evaluators, in short, are co‐researchers in the entire process.…”

“…Action research was an appropriate methodology because AR focuses on research in action (Coughlan & Coghlan, 2002). Its cyclical stepped AR process is participative, flexible and allows the introduction of change management by internal sources, so that the participative relationship of those affected by change fosters collective ownership (Whitehead, 2005).…”

“…With these barriers in mind, we chose an action-oriented methodology to support implementation and to provide an opportunity to explore the problems associated with the development of ITR practice in HEIs in five different countries in Europe. The study adopts an approach that is significantly different from other forms of academic research in that it does not intend to create objective findings which can be generalised, but rather it aims to generate practical knowledge and act as a framework to develop new understanding, aid the implementation of innovative practice (<IR>) and identify good practice (Whitehead, 2005;Hind et al 2013).…”
