Prolactin (<I>PRL</I>) and Prolactin Receptor (<I>PRLR</I>) Genes and their Role in Poultry Production Traits

Abstract: Prolactin (PRL), secreted from the anterior pituitary, plays extensive roles in osmoregulation, corpus luteum formation, mammogenesis, lactogenesis, lactopoiesis, and production of crop milk. In birds, prolactin (PRL) is generally accepted as crucial to the onset and maintenance of broodiness. All the actions of prolactin (PRL) hormone are mediated by its receptor (PRLR), which plays an important role in the PRL signal transduction cascade. It has been well established that the PRL gene is closely associated t… Show more

“…PRL is one of the strongest decidualization markers [129] involved in regulating endometrial secretory activity in human and rodent, but not in canine [130]. However, it is noteworthy that PRL cannot play important role in the signal transduction cascade without its receptor, PRLR [131]. In this study, the miR-182 mimics did not regulate the protein levels of PRLR in the EECs of dairy goats, but the miR-182 inhibitors down-regulated the levels, suggesting that miR-182 may be an essential factor to keep the expression of PRLR protein levels in the EECs of dairy goats.…”

“…Pituitary VIP stimulated prolactin release and expression in vivo and in vitro in several avian species (Al Kahtane et al, 2005). VIP promoted the release of PRL in different period and then maintained broodiness in chicken Wilkanowska et al, 2014). Immunisation against VIP antibody in bantam hens during broodiness resulted in the termination of nesting within 5 days and the serum PRL level significantly declined (Sharp et al, 1989;March and Sharp, 1994).…”

“…The gene encoding follistatin (FST), which inhibits follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) (Depaolo et al, 1991;Robertson et al, 1990;Wang et al, 1990;Ying et al, 1987) and therefore affects reproduction, was expressed higher in RJF. TSHB and DIO2 stimulate metabolism and reproduction (Nakao et al, 2008), whereas PRLR, MTNR1B and PGR modulate seasonal behavior, including reproduction, molting and broodiness (Wilkanowska et al, 2014), and these genes were all expressed higher in WL.…”
