Prolonged Acadian orogenesis: Revelations from foliation intersection axis (FIA) controlled monazite dating of foliations in porphyroblasts and matrix

Abstract: Numerous phases of garnet growth are revealed by detailed studies of foliation inflection/intersection axes preserved in porphyroblasts (FIAs) in Acadian metamorphic rocks in the Chester Dome region of Vermont, in the United States of America. A regionally consistent succession of four different FIA trends in garnet porphyroblasts has been dated by analyzing monazite inclusions with an electron microprobe. These monazite inclusions, which lie within the various foliations that define the FIAs, provide absolute… Show more

“…This technique capitalises on the ability of monazite to preserve multiple episodes of growth and regrowth, as very small areas (510 mm) can be accurately analysed (Copeland et al 1988;Montel et al 1996;Braun et al 1998;Cocherie et al 1998;Crowley & Ghent 1999;Williams et al 1999;Bell & Welch 2002;Williams & Jercinovic 2002;Jercinovic & Williams 2005;Pyle et al 2005). Furthermore, since monazite commonly occurs as inclusions in common metamorphic minerals, it offers the opportunity to constrain the timing of metamorphic mineral growth, thereby constraining the timing of metamorphism.…”

“…Dating of monazite inclusions within different FIA sets (Bell and Welch 2002;Ali 2010;Sanislav 2010;Sanislav and Shah 2010) provides a robust tool for understanding and unravelling lengthy and complex orogenic histories. Integration of FIAs with this approach provides a strong basis for studying the complex pressure-temperature-time-deformation (PT-t-D) paths that rocks appear to have followed.…”
