Prolonged suppression of tinnitus after peripheral nerve block using bupivacaine and lidocaine

Abstract: There are no reports regarding the use of bupivacaine for suppression of tinnitus. Although previous reports studying lidocaine for this purpose have shown only a brief effect, the use of bupivacaine or a combination of lidocaine and bupivacaine, as in this case, may represent a treatment for tinnitus that is worth further investigation. There currently is no effective long-term therapy for this debilitating problem.

“…A notable exception is local anaesthetics: in 1935, Bárány noted that intravenous injection of procaine temporarily alleviated tinnitus in most patients. 60 Lidocaine 61 and bupivacaine 62 also have this eff ect. Subsequent work has shown that the alleviation occurs within the central auditory pathways of the brain, 63 although an additional cochlear eff ect cannot be excluded.…”

“…Subsequently, the effects of lidocaine on tinnitus have been con rmed by double-blind studies (3,4). Recently, Weinmeister (5) reported a case of prolonged suppression of tinnitus after peripheral nerve block using a combination of lidocaine and bupivacaine. Sanchez et al (6) evaluated the response to i.v.…”
