This work focused on the investigation of the effect of zirconium incorporation into the structure of the Ni/AlSBA-15 catalyst on its performance in high-temperature conversion of cellulose (the main component of lignocellulosic feedstock) to hydrogen-rich gas. The modified supports were prepared by direct incorporation of zirconium and impregnation methods. The obtained results exhibited that introduction of zirconium into the structure of Ni/AlSBA-15 allowed for a considerable increase in the amount of hydrogen produced in the studied process in comparison to unmodified Ni/AlSBA-15 material. The characterization of physicochemical properties of the investigated materials (X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, temperature-programmed reduction, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia, etc.) showed that the preparation of mesoporous Ni/ZrAlSBA-15 with the use of the direct synthesis method led to obtaining the catalyst with a higher surface area and pore volume and smaller crystallites of an active phase in comparison to the material containing nickel supported on ZrAlSBA-15 with zirconium introduced by impregnation. Despite that the mesoporous catalyst prepared by impregnation possessed higher acidity, its structure underwent partial collapse during the preparation procedure.

Efficient transformation of biomass to value-added chemicals and high-energy density fuels is pivotal for a more sustainable economy and carbon-neutral society. In this framework, developing potential cascade chemical processes using functionalised heterogeneous catalysts is essential because of their versatile roles towards viable biomass valorisation. Advances in materials science and catalysis have provided several innovative strategies for the design of new appealing catalytic materials with well-defined structures and special characteristics. Promising catalytic materials that have paved the way for exciting scientific breakthroughs in biomass upgrading are carbon materials, metal-organic frameworks, solid phase ionic liquids, and magnetic iron oxides. These fascinating catalysts offer unique possibilities to accommodate adequate amounts of acid-base and redox functional species, hence enabling various biomass conversion reactions in a one-pot way. This review therefore aims to provide a comprehensive account of the most significant advances in the development of functionalised heterogeneous catalysts for efficient biomass upgrading. In addition, this review highlights important progress ensued in tailoring the immobilisation of desirable functional groups on particular sites of the above-listed materials, while critically discussing the role of consequent properties on cascade reactions as well as on other vital processes within the bio-refinery. Current challenges and future opportunities towards a rational design of novel functionalised heterogeneous catalysts for sustainable biomass valorisation are also emphasized.

Direct selective hydrogenolysis of dibenzofuran (DBF) derived from coal and shale oil to a value-added chemical, ortho-phenylphenol (OPP), with high selectivity (80%) and yield (48%) has been achieved over Pt/MgO at 400 °C and 1.0 MPa by controlling the C–O bond cleavage as well as minimizing the extent of hydrogenation of aromatic rings. Meanwhile, Pt/SiO2, Pt/Al2O3, and Pt/MgO/Al2O3 catalysts were used for the DBF hydrogenolysis and showed lower selectivity for OPP. The influence of reaction parameters has been studied to unveil the optimal reaction conditions. And the phenomenon of OPP dehydrogenation is found over various catalysts for the hydrogenation reaction of OPP. Extensive reactions and catalyst characterizations demonstrated that the OPP selectivity and the dehydrogenation of OPP to DBF follows the order of supports basicity: MgO-900 > MgO > SiO2 > MgO/Al2O3 > Al2O3, which shows that the acid–base properties of supports impact the adsorption and desorption behaviors of DBF and OPP, and results in the disparity of OPP selectivity and the dehydrogenation of OPP. Finally, a plausible reaction pathway and mechanistic understanding are proposed.
